I’ve always wondered what drives successful individuals. How are they able to accomplish so much, against all odds, and come out on top every time?
What attributes and skills do successful people have that others don’t?
And if they do possess certain skills, is that the secret to their success?
The truth is there is no secret to success. You ask any successful person and they will all give you a different answer for what it takes. Some skills have been proven to help a person succeed. But even if you possess all these skills, you still may be missing the most important ingredient.
What is Success?
Success is relative. Every person defines success differently. Maybe it’s becoming a millionaire. Or earning $10,000 a month. Maybe it’s improving your health. Or developing strong relationships with your family.
However you define success is completely up to you.
For us to come up with a universal definition of success, I can think of no better way than how Earl Nightingale describes it:
“Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal.”Earl nightingale
Adopting this philosophy, we can say success is simply the ability to make progress toward your goals.
When you set a goal, say earning $10,000 per month in passive income, and can make progressive steps toward reaching that goal, then you are successful.
How to be Successful?
Becoming successful starts with your mindset. It’s all about attitude.
A person with an open mindset that is developed toward growth will inevitably become successful.
A person with a closed mindset will only see lack and limitations, thus preventing them from ever becoming successful.
If you want to become successful, then you must develop a growth oriented mindset that will help you find solutions, create new ideas, and develop confidence to reaching your goals.
The Voice Inside Your Head
We all have a voice in our heads that guide us. It’s the voice you hear every time you think.
This voice can either be your greatest ally or your worst enemy.
What you say to yourself when no one is around determines how you feel, what actions you take, and ultimately, how successful you are in life.
This voice is linked directly to your self identity. Self identity is defined as, “the recognition of one’s potential and qualities as an individual.”
For example, do you see yourself as someone who is confident? A leader? A social butterfly? Someone with power and influence?
Or someone who is timid? Weak? And unsuccessful?
Aside from genetics and physical attributes, the way you think is the only thing that separates you from anyone else.
If you want to become a person of success, then you must learn how to tame the voice inside your head.
Start by Asking the Right Questions
The easiest way to tame this voice and change how you think is to start asking the right questions.
As Robert Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad Poor Dad once said, “A question opens the mind. A statement closes it.”
Asking the right questions opens your mind to new possibilities.
Instead of seeing a nice car and saying, “I can never afford that.” Say, “how can I afford that?”
Instead of saying, “I will never be able to start a business.” Say, “What do I need to do today to start a successful business.”
This reframes a limiting belief into a possibility. By asking questions, you no longer accept things for the way they are and start thinking of new ways to make changes.
Fortune Favors The Bold
This is a simple exercise you can start right away.
Make a list of everything that you want to accomplish. Don’t hold back and think as big as possible.
If you had a magic lamp you could rub and have anything you want, what would you ask for?
Write down everything that comes to mind.
Go over the list and write down all the excuses that come to mind for why you can’t have it.
Cross off these negative statements and reframe them with a question.
I can never afford that – How can I afford this? I don’t have time – How do I use my time wisely? I am not an outgoing person – How do I develop a magnetic personality? I am unhealthy – What do I have to do to start exercising everyday? I suck – How can I improve?
Whenever you hear yourself making these negative statements, reframe them with a question that asks how you can overcome that obstacle.
It’s a simple exercise but it’s powerful. By making it a habit to start asking the right questions, you will develop a growth oriented mindset that will bring you success for the rest of your life.
